Annual Wausau Possum Day & Festival
'Possum Day', is held the first Saturday in August, in Wausau, Florida.
Wausau is the self proclaimed “Possum Capital” and is home to the Possum Palace. Where many events like Possum Festival are held. In 1982 Florida Legislature passed a joint resolution recognizing the first Saturday of August as Possum Day in Florida.
Possum Festival is a fun event bringing thousands to the small town. The 2 day event beginning Friday, brings the Possum King and Queen, which are not your normal beauty pageant. Men and women gather their finest “possum” attire. The men brag on their hunting of possum, while the ladies strut their stuff and give their best “possum” recipe. Definitely a sight to see. Visitors are also encouraged to sample cooked possum on, Possum Saturday.
A Day Full of Activites
The annual event includes a host of family-friendly activites including:
Pancake Breakfast, Arts & Crafts Vendors, The Possum Trot 5k Run, Town Parade, Horeshoe pitching. Contest include; Hog Callin' Rooster Crowin' & Cow Lowin'. Entertainment throughout the day includes Live Gospel, Bluegrass and Country Music bands. The event is topped off on Saturday night with an old fashioned dance.
Festival hosts include the Town of Wausau, the Wausau Volunteer Fire Department and the Wausau Development Club, and the festival draws attendees from all over the Southeast United States, especially in election years.
